Alex Eala achieved the biggest milestone of her career after rallying past world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to claim the WTA 500 Mubadala DC Open crown in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, August 4.
The 21-year-old tennis star navigated a rain delay to outlast the 2019 tournament champion and secure her maiden WTA Tour singles trophy, becoming the first Filipina player to capture a WTA Tour title.
The triumph marked Eala’s seventh win over a Top 10 player this season while earning her redemption following a semifinal loss to Pegula at the previous year’s Miami Open.
Comeback After Rain Delay
Eala entered the restarted match trailing 4-6, 2-1, after persistent showers on Monday, August 3, halted play and forced the final into a second day.
The overnight pause proved beneficial for Eala, who returned with sharp intensity. She matched the American shot for shot before earning a critical break of serve in the 10th game to level the match at one set apiece.
Dominant Deciding Set
Carrying momentum and supported by an energized crowd, Eala dominated the final set by dictating play from the baseline and overwhelming Pegula.
The historic victory was sealed when Pegula sent a two-handed backhand wide on championship point, sending the Filipina to her knees in celebration as the historic achievement sank in.
