Filipino tennis star Alex Eala is looking to wrap up her 2026 season with a strong performance as she begins her campaign at the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open on Monday, November 2.
The 21-year-old enters the tournament fresh off a quarterfinal run at the WTA 500 Tokyo Open, where she suffered a close 6-2, 6-7(5), 4-6 defeat to Diana Shnaider. Seeded No. 2 and holding a world ranking of No. 19, Eala faces unseeded American Alycia Parks in the Round of 32.
The upcoming match marks the third career meeting between the two players, with their head-to-head record tied at 1-1. Parks won their first encounter in a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback during the Australian Open qualifying round earlier this year, while Eala evened the score with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory in Toronto last August.
A win against Parks would advance Eala to the second round, where she could face either China’s Xinran Sun or the Czech Republic’s Tereza Talentova.
The seven-day tournament features a prize pool of $283,347 (approximately ₱18 million) and is headlined by top seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania, alongside No. 3 seed Leylah Fernandez, No. 4 seed Maria Sakkari, No. 5 seed Talia Gibson, and No. 6 seed Xinyu Wang.
Other notable names in the draw include Katie Boulter, Maya Joint, Liudmila Samsonova, and 46-year-old tennis icon Venus Williams, who faces compatriot Mary Stoiana in her opening match.
The Hong Kong Open serves as Eala’s final professional circuit appearance of the year before she returns home for an exhibition match against Singaporean Janice Tjen on December 8 at the Philippine Arena.
