Filipina tennis star Alex Eala put on a gritty display to defeat Russia’s Alina Charaeva, 6-2, 7-5, securing her spot in the quarterfinal round of the WTA 125 Birmingham Open.
Entering the tournament as the top seed, Eala established her dominance early on, controlling the first set with a mix of reliable serves and powerful returns.
She capitalized on Charaeva’s early missteps—including a string of double faults—by breaking the Russian’s serve in the very first game to set the tone.
Charaeva found it difficult to establish her rhythm, only getting herself onto the scoreboard past the midway point of the opener. Eala kept her foot on the gas and successfully converted her fifth set point to comfortably take the first frame, 6-2.
The momentum shifted drastically in the second set as Charaeva adjusted her strategy, utilizing drop shots, slices, and deeper baseline winners to throw off Eala’s rhythm.
Thriving in the fast-paced grass court conditions, the Russian quickly raced to a commanding 5-2 advantage.
Faced with a heavy deficit, Eala showed remarkable resilience, utilizing her superb court coverage and steady shot-making to chip away at the lead. She reeled off consecutive games to narrow the score to 4-5, keeping the pressure on her opponent.
Refusing to back down, Eala went on a dominant run by capturing five of the final seven games, completing a stunning comeback to wrap up the match in straight sets.
With this victory, Eala sets up a quarterfinal clash against Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee, who is currently ranked world No. 173.
The triumph also extends Eala’s winning record over Charaeva, whom she previously dominated with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the Philippine Women’s Open earlier this year.
