ATENEO DE ZAMBOANGA UNIVERSITY TIGHTENS CAMPUS SECURITY FOLLOWING UNVERIFIED VIOLENCE THREATS

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU) has ramped up security protocols across its campus following online messages regarding an alleged threat of violence on Monday, October 19.

In an official statement, the AdZU Grade School Department addressed the community’s concerns, noting that it “understands the fear and anxiety caused by circulating messages about a reported threat of violence on October 19.”

The administration acknowledged the heightened sensitivity of the situation, adding, “Coming just two months after the tragedy of August 18, we recognize why these messages are especially distressing to our families.”

While school officials confirmed they are taking the reports seriously, they clarified that verified checks indicate “no substantiated threat has been identified.”

AdZU is currently reviewing all received information and working closely with the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct deeper verification and ensure proper security responses.

To mitigate risks, the Kreutz Campus has deployed tighter entry protocols, including rigorous screening procedures, metal detectors, X-ray baggage inspections, and restricted access points.

“As an additional precaution, we will further reinforce perimeter security and increase the number of roving security personnel,” the institution stated.

School leaders promised to issue prompt updates via official channels should further precautions or adjustments to campus operations become necessary.

Campus security remains a primary concern following a fatal shooting incident on August 18, which left two students dead—including the gunman—and another injured inside the Zamboanga City school.

Reassuring the community, the university emphasized its long-term dedication to student safety, concluding, “We recognize that rebuilding trust takes time and requires consistent action. We remain committed to protecting our students and caring for their well-being with vigilance, transparency, and responsibility. Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and continued partnership.”
