BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — Mayor Greg Gasataya held discussions with local transport leaders on Monday to address growing financial strains caused by escalating fuel prices, which have impacted both public transport operators and city government services.
The meeting took place during a three-day nationwide transport strike organized by various driver groups protesting against continuous petroleum price hikes.
“All of us are deeply affected by these ongoing fuel price hikes. That is why we truly understand what you are going through,” Gasataya said, noting that municipal operations are also feeling the weight of rising fuel costs.
During the dialogue, Rudy Catedral, president of the Bacolod Alliance of Commuters, Operators, and Drivers-Negros Island (BACODNI-MANIBELA), urged the national government to grant immediate financial relief by temporarily suspending the 12 percent Value-Added Tax and excise taxes on petroleum products.
Catedral also requested municipal-level assistance to help lessen the economic burden on local drivers and operators.
Transport leaders reassured city officials that they would maintain partial fleet operations along key routes during Tuesday’s protest to ensure minimal disruption for workers, students, and daily commuters.
In response, Gasataya confirmed that the Bacolod City Police Office would monitor public safety throughout the demonstrations. To further assist the public, the local government launched a “Libreng Sakay” (free ride) initiative covering strategic locations across the city.
Free transport services were stationed at key transit points, including Bata (Mormons Church) with two vehicles, Alijis (Crossing/Circumferential 7-Eleven), Handumanan (Barangay Gym), Sum-ag (Phoenix Gas Station), and Granada (Barangay Hall).
