The Asian Games men’s basketball title defense of Gilas Pilipinas came to an abrupt end on Monday, September 14, following a 105-61 loss to China at the Aichi International Arena during the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
The Philippines entered the matchup needing either a win or a loss of no more than 37 points to secure a quarterfinal spot as one of the tournament’s two top third-placed teams.
However, the 44-point defeat dropped the team’s overall point differential from +27 down to -17, eliminating them from medal contention and marking the first time a Gilas Pilipinas squad failed to advance past the group stage.
China seized control early in the opening period, mounting a 20-5 run after an initial 16-11 lead to stretch its advantage to 36-20 by the end of the first quarter. The Chinese squad extended its control in the second frame, heading into halftime with a 66-30 cushion.
Despite trailing heavily at the break, the Philippines retained a mathematical chance to advance based on the required point margin. China put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter by building a 40-point cushion at 86-46, maintaining command until the final buzzer to avenge its semifinal loss to the Philippines in the previous Asian Games edition.
Wang Junjie, a 6-foot-9 forward, led China with 20 points, while teammates Liao Sanning and Hu Mingxuan scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. The win secured China the top seed in Group C with a perfect 3-0 record.
Calvin Oftana served as the sole double-digit scorer for the Philippines with 13 points. Sedrick Barefield added nine points, and Don Trollano finished with seven.
Gilas concluded its tournament campaign with a 1-2 record in group play, placing ninth overall.
