Alex Eala anchored a landmark month for Philippine sports in August after securing her inaugural WTA Tour crown at the WTA 500 Mubadala Open in Washington, D.C.
The 21-year-old tennis standout defeated a star-studded lineup—including Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng, reigning winner Leylah Fernandez, world No. 10 Elina Svitolina, former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, and world No. 3 Jessica Pegula—en route to the title.
The victory elevated Eala to a career-high world ranking of No. 18, surpassing the previous Southeast Asian record of No. 19 set by Indonesia’s Yayuk Basuki and Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn.
The achievement earned Eala the headlining spot on the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) honor roll for the eighth time in 2026.
Joining Eala among the month’s top achievers was pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who dominated the European circuit with a meet-record clearance of 5.91 meters at the Golden Sand 2026 in Poland, alongside victories in Jockgrim (5.83m) and Berlin (5.82m).
Filipino athletes also excelled in various global events throughout the month:
- Obstacle Course Racing: The mixed team of Sandi Menchi Abahan, Marites Nocyao, Jeffrey Reginio, and Jordan Paul Biollones grabbed gold in the 30+ 400m event at the OCR World Championships in Ireland with a time of 2:18.400.
- Weightlifting: National youth and junior lifters collected 31 total medals in Uzbekistan, highlighted by Albert Ian Delos Santos, who swept the Junior Men’s 70kg category while setting new world and Asian records in the clean and jerk (180kg) and total (321kg).
- Speed Skating: Thirteen-year-old Keirsten Layne Fernandez won gold in the Junior C Girls 1000m and bronze in the 777m at the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy in India, where Xsandrie Guimba (silver) and Zymone Zurbito (bronze) also reached the podium.
- Golf: Ten-year-old Kamilla Edrianna Guerrero del Mundo captured the US Kids Golf world championship in North Carolina, finishing at 17-under-par 199.
- Beach Volleyball: Alas Pilipinas claimed a 1-2 finish at the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Futures in South Korea, with Khy Progella and Sofiah Shanine Pagara taking gold over teammates Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons.
