Iran’s Revolutionary Guards declared on Monday that they executed a unannounced strike against an adversarial command outpost located in Syria, as reported by Iranian state-controlled media outlets.
In an official announcement distributed via Telegram by the state-operated IRNA news agency, the military branch stated they had initiated “a surprise attack on the enemy special operations command centre in the Al-Tanf region of Syria in revenge for the blood of martyred soldiers of Iranshahr”.
The military action was reportedly launched in retaliation for the deaths of three Iranian service members. According to the nation’s Tasnim news agency, the soldiers lost their lives during an American airstrike that targeted a military barracks situated in Iranshahr, located in southeastern Iran. Memorial services for the fallen troops took place on Sunday.
Prior to this event, the Revolutionary Guards had claimed responsibility last Friday for a separate assault directed at the Al-Tanf military facility. Iranian forces maintained that the base had transitioned to Syrian government control back in February, following a pullout by American troops.
Despite these claims, a Syrian military official subsequently refuted the report, telling Agence France-Presse (AFP) that no such assault had actually taken place.
The Al-Tanf outpost is positioned in the southeastern sector of Syria, in close proximity to the tripartite border junction shared with Jordan and Iraq.
