JAPAN APPROVES MAJOR VISA FEE INCREASE

For the first time in nearly half a century, Japan is introducing a substantial hike to its visa application fees for international visitors.

The decision, finalized during a cabinet meeting on Friday, overhauls a pricing structure that has remained completely unchanged since 1978.

Under the newly approved rates, which take effect on July 1, the cost of a single-entry visa will skyrocket from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000. Travelers looking for a multiple-entry visa will also face a steep increase, with rates climbing from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi explained that the change is a necessary response to current financial realities:

“This adjustment takes into account price increases and economic realities. We do not expect the higher fees to have an immediate impact on inbound tourism.”

The sharp price hike has triggered questions for prospective travelers from countries that currently benefit from fee waivers, such as temporary visitor applicants from the Philippines.

Japan has not yet clarified whether existing bilateral agreements and fee exemptions will be altered or maintained under the new system.

Regardless of potential exemptions, travelers should remember they are still responsible for external costs, such as service fees from private visa application centers, handling charges, and document processing expenses.
