MALACAÑANG DECLARES JUNE 24 A HOLIDAY FOR MANILA’S 455TH FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY

Malacañang has officially declared Wednesday, June 24, 2026, as a special nonworking holiday in the City of Manila to commemorate the capital’s 455th founding anniversary.

The declaration was formalized under Proclamation No. 1320, which was signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on June 16.

According to the document, the holiday was declared to ensure that the people of Manila are given the “full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration.”

The Manila Public Information Office announced that the city has lined up a series of activities for the anniversary. A key event of the celebration will be Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso’s State of the City Address (SOCA), which will be delivered at the Quirino Grandstand.

The city government noted that the upcoming address will also mark the first year of Mayor Domagoso’s current term under his “Bilis Kilos 2.0” governance agenda.

Historically known as Manila Day, June 24 marks the local founding of the city by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi in 1571.

The annual celebration highlights Manila’s extensive historical legacy as one of the oldest cities in the country and its long-standing role as the historical seat of political power during the Spanish colonial period.
