Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso confirmed on Wednesday, August 26, that local health facilities hold a sufficient stockpile of free antibiotics to tackle a surge in leptospirosis cases.
During a social media broadcast, Domagoso disclosed that the city’s inventory of doxycycline capsules expanded from 51,000 on August 24 to 389,000.
The updated stockpile includes 300,000 capsules supplied by the Department of Health and 40,000 donated by private partners.
“To the residents of Manila—whether poor, middle class, or wealthy—we have these 389,000 doxycycline capsules available, and you can access them,” Domagoso said.
The mayor urged individuals who traversed floodwaters to visit any of Manila’s seven district hospitals or 44 health centers for prophylactic medication without delay.
“Even if they are not yet experiencing symptoms—in accordance with the advice of health professionals,” Domagoso emphasized.
The capital city has logged 197 total leptospirosis infections, with 89 new cases identified on Wednesday, August 26. Domagoso reported five fatalities during the week—one recorded on August 24, followed by two deaths each on August 25 and August 26.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the five families of those who passed away just this week,” the mayor added.
Health officials anticipate a continued rise in diagnosed cases in the coming days, given the disease’s two-week incubation period.
