MANILA MEETS GANGNAM: TV5 AND VIU REVEALS STAR-STUDDED CULINARY CROSSOVER ‘KUMUSTA’

TV5 has officially pulled back the curtain on its most ambitious cultural project to date: a reality variety series titled Kumusta.

Scheduled to premiere on May 24, 2026, the show marks a historic collaboration between Philippine media and South Korean production expertise, documenting a high-stakes, seven-week immersive restaurant experiment in the heart of Seoul’s iconic Gangnam district.

A Pop-Up with a Purpose

Moving away from the standard elimination-style cooking competition, Kumusta focuses on a powerhouse ensemble of Filipino celebrities and professional chefs tasked with operating a fully functional Filipino restaurant.

The objective is to introduce the bold and complex flavor profiles of the Philippines—ranging from savory adobo to tart sinigang—to the discerning Korean public.

The staff features a high-profile roster including Jodi Sta. Maria, Janella Salvador, Francine Diaz, and Arci Muñoz.

Guided by the culinary expertise of Michelin-recognized Chef JP Anglo and Chef Kim Yumol, these screen idols must trade their scripts for aprons, navigating the grueling physical and mental demands of a professional kitchen.

K-Drama Meets Pinoy Hospitality

The series has already ignited international social media trends following the announcement of its South Korean cast members. Global K-drama icon Ji Chang-wook joins the crew in a “front of house” capacity.

Speaking at a recent media conference at the Sheraton Manila Hotel, the actor was candid about his decision to stay out of the kitchen:

“I’m not a good cook—I didn’t want to cause trouble. Instead, I want to support the team from the frontlines.”

The star-studded lineup doesn’t end there. Teasers for the show have confirmed appearances and participation from Kim Myung-soo, Seo In-guk, and Kim Min-seok, as well as famed celebrity chef Choi Hyun-seok, a breakout star from the global hit Culinary Class Wars.

More Than Just Food

The title Kumusta—a Filipino greeting rooted in the Spanish ¿Cómo está?—reflects the show’s focus on human connection.

Beyond the recipes, the series captures the raw challenges of the team, from the logistical nightmare of sourcing authentic Filipino ingredients in Seoul to the nuances of bridging cultural gaps through service.

Chef JP Anglo emphasized that the stakes were incredibly real, noting that the establishment functioned as a genuine business rather than a closed television set.

The mission, according to the production, is to prove that Filipino hospitality and cuisine can thrive on the global stage.

Where to Watch

Kumusta will anchor TV5’s Weekend Trip block, airing Sundays starting May 24. For international viewers and digital audiences, the series will also be available for streaming via Viu Philippines.

Inviting fans to witness this unique journey, Ji Chang-wook described the pop-up experience as:

“The funniest, most heartfelt place where food, dreams, and human connection come together.”
