WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has strongly dismissed reports suggesting he plans to step down from President Donald Trump’s administration following the Republican party’s losses in the midterm elections.
In an interview with The New York Times, Rubio pushed back against the speculation and clarified his long-term professional intentions:
“It has always been my plan to work for President Donald Trump until the end of his term,” Rubio said, adding, “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you.”
The rumors surfaced following reports from Bloomberg News and The Independent claiming that Rubio was weighing an early exit to evaluate his political future and potentially launch a bid for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.
However, State Department officials sharply criticized the coverage. Dylan Johnson, Assistant Secretary of State for global public affairs, dismissed the articles as completely baseless.
Widely viewed as a potential 2028 presidential contender alongside Vice President JD Vance, Rubio declined to address future political ambitions:
“I literally will not talk about 2028 anymore,” he stated.
