Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is currently undergoing strategic enhancements to welcome regional leaders and delegates for the upcoming ASEAN Summit, scheduled for May 5 to 9, 2026.
Aboitiz InfraCapital confirmed that the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) has initiated significant upgrades to the general aviation terminal. These technical improvements include the repainting of apron pavement markings, the refurbishment of the perimeter fence, and the allocation of specialized parking bays specifically for ASEAN-related aircraft.
The infrastructure push extends beyond the runway. To manage the anticipated surge in traffic, officials are widening the Ibo Access Road, complemented by upgraded lighting and landscaping.
Within Terminals 1 and 2, dedicated zones are being established for official summit vehicles, while technical teams ensure a redundant and reliable power supply for all airport lounges.
To showcase Cebuano heritage, the airport is integrating local artistry into the delegate experience. Lounges will be outfitted with locally sourced furniture and stocked with Filipino delicacies. Furthermore, select airport personnel will debut ASEAN-themed uniforms featuring traditional Cebuano weaves.
While the physical transformations are extensive, the summit will maintain a disciplined fiscal approach.
The government previously clarified that the 48th ASEAN Summit and its associated meetings will operate under a:
“very bare-boned” setup as part of cost-cutting measures amid the national energy emergency.
Despite these austerity measures, the upgrades at MCIA are designed to ensure seamless logistics and a warm cultural reception for the visiting international community.
