Commuters in Metro Manila can avail of free train rides on June 12 as the country celebrates its 128th Independence Day. The special promo will be implemented across the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).
The free transit services will be available during peak commuting hours, specifically from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
The Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), which operates LRT-1, noted that its route passes through various historical landmarks and cultural sites, earning it the nickname “Heritage Line.”
“The free ride initiative aims to make it easier for the public to join Independence Day festivities and visit cultural and tourist spots near stations, allowing Filipinos to reconnect with the nation’s rich history,” the LRMC said.
To access the free rides, passengers holding stored-value Beep cards can tap through the turnstiles without any deductions to their balance. Meanwhile, commuters without Beep cards can claim free single-journey tickets at the station teller booths.
Philippine Independence Day is a national regular holiday celebrated with synchronized flag-raising ceremonies, parades, and cultural activities across the country.
The annual event commemorates June 12, 1898, when General Emilio Aguinaldo, the nation’s first president, officially declared Philippine independence at his residence in Kawit, Cavite, marking the first time the national flag was hoisted.
