Commuters taking the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) can ride for free on June 12 in celebration of the 128th Philippine Independence Day, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced on Friday.
According to the DOTr’s public advisory, the free train services will be available to passengers during two peak commuting windows: from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The transportation initiative is tied to the nationwide activities honoring Independence Day, which Malacañang has designated as a regular holiday.
This year’s celebration marks the historic June 12, 1898 declaration of Philippine independence, a pivotal moment in the nation’s fight for self-governance following over 300 years of Spanish colonial rule.
The annual holiday stands as a tribute to the bravery, love of country, and immense sacrifices made by Filipino heroes to win the nation’s sovereignty and freedom.
Aside from easing travel expenses for thousands of daily passengers, the complimentary MRT-3 rides aim to inspire the public to take part in the country’s national festivities.
