A new P-pop girl group has officially entered the local music scene, bringing a youthful and distinctly Filipino concept as it seeks to capture the attention of audiences across different generations.
MEI MEI, the newest act under Groovy Garden Records, made its formal debut with a showcase performance that introduced the group’s identity, members, and first musical offering.
The eight-member group is composed of Alexa, Jhamayka, Ada, Aerise, Thea, Yuni, Dina, and leader Jessie. MEI MEI is managed by Groovy Garden Records, a music label operating under the PULP Music Group.
According to the group, its name draws inspiration from the Filipino custom of repeating names or nicknames, with “Mei” selected because of its familiarity and appeal within Filipino culture.
Although the term “Mei Mei” is also recognized in Chinese as an expression referring to a younger sister, the group emphasized that its image and artistic direction are rooted in Filipino identity and culture.
The group formally introduced itself to the public during its debut showcase at SM Skydome, where members performed and shared details about their musical direction.
Among the highlights of the event was the preview of their debut single, “Telebong,” an upbeat and energetic track inspired by traditional Filipino childhood games and playful experiences familiar to many young Filipinos. The song is intended to evoke nostalgia while delivering a contemporary P-pop sound aimed at younger audiences.
MEI MEI officially released the music video for “Telebong” on May 29, marking the start of the group’s journey in the competitive Philippine pop music industry.
With its colorful concept and youthful energy, the group hopes to establish a unique presence in the growing P-pop landscape while celebrating elements of Filipino culture through its music and performances.
