The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has logged more than 1,300 aftershocks after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Maasim, Sarangani on Monday.
According to PHIVOLCS, a total of 1,352 aftershocks were recorded as of 4:00 PM, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 6.4. Out of these subsequent tremors, monitoring stations plotted 391 events, while 35 were strong enough to be felt by local residents.
The massive earthquake originated off the coast of Maasim at 7:37 AM on Monday. The tremor triggered tsunami waves and inflicted significant damage on infrastructure, electricity, and communication networks throughout various regions of Mindanao.
State seismologists have maintained their earlier warning that aftershocks may continue to shake the region for up to a month.
