MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has transitioned from active cleanup to monitoring operations in the coastal waters of Mariveles, Bataan, following the successful recovery of substantial oil-contaminated waste.
On Saturday, November 7, the PCG reported that 1,660 kilograms of oil-contaminated materials packed into 83 sacks were brought to a local transfer station in Mariveles for temporary storage. The collected waste will subsequently be turned over to an accredited oily waste collector and a licensed treatment, storage, and disposal facility.
The response efforts followed an incident reported on Friday, wherein approximately 25 liters of used oil leaked into an estimated 500-square-meter area of coastal waters in Sitio Naswe, Barangay Ipag.
Following joint containment and recovery efforts, a subsequent inspection conducted by the PCG response team alongside the Mariveles Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office confirmed that there are no longer any visible traces of oil sheen surrounding the affected zone.
