The Quezon City government is looking into using satellite information and space-based technology to improve policymaking, disaster preparedness, urban development, and other public services.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and other city officials met with Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) Director General Dr. Gay Jane P. Perez and agency representatives on Wednesday, September 2, to explore possible areas of cooperation.
During the meeting, PhilSA officials presented the agency’s programs and discussed how space technology could be applied to various local government concerns, including disaster risk reduction, climate research, mapping, urban planning, national security, and public service delivery.
The discussions also focused on how satellite-derived information and technical expertise could support the creation of evidence-based policies and programs tailored to the needs of communities across Quezon City.
PhilSA likewise underscored the role of space education in encouraging young Filipinos to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), helping develop a future pool of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
Both sides also explored potential ways to integrate space-based technologies and dependable data into the city’s planning and decision-making processes, with the goal of making government programs more responsive to the needs of Quezon City residents.
