LOS ANGELES — Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is set to receive the prestigious American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award during a grand gala tribute scheduled for April 24, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
The announcement was made Wednesday by the AFI board of trustees, honoring the 64-year-old actor and producer for his remarkable four-decade career and lasting impact on the film industry.
Kathleen Kennedy, chair of the AFI board of trustees, lauded the actor’s profound dedication to the craft.
“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” Kennedy stated, highlighting his enduring belief in cinema’s unique power to bring audiences together.
Cruise boasts an impressive cinematic resume, starring in blockbusters and critically acclaimed films such as “Risky Business,” “A Few Good Men,” “Jerry Maguire,” “Minority Report,” and the iconic “Mission: Impossible” franchise. His illustrious career includes three Academy Award acting nominations for “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Jerry Maguire,” and “Magnolia,” alongside a Best Picture nomination as a producer for “Top Gun: Maverick.”
This latest recognition follows his receipt of an honorary Oscar at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Governors Awards last year.
Established in 1973, the AFI Life Achievement Award celebrates individuals whose work has profoundly advanced the art of film. Cruise joins a legendary roster of past honorees, including John Ford, Bette Davis, Sidney Poitier, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Eddie Murphy.
Proceeds from the upcoming tribute gala will directly support the American Film Institute’s various national education and arts initiatives.
