Japan’s Anniversary Association has officially certified September 9 as “Attack on Titan Day” (Shingeki no Kyojin no Hi), commemorating the 17th anniversary of Hajime Isayama’s legendary manga series.
Publisher Kodansha spearheaded the official registration to honor the franchise’s enduring global legacy. The manga originally debuted in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine on September 9, 2009, with the “9/9” date directly symbolizing the lore’s iconic “Nine Titans.”
To celebrate the milestone, Kodansha unveiled a new key visual featuring the Nine Titans rendered in a “9/9” silhouette alongside an anniversary logo inspired by the Doomsday Titan. Series creator Hajime Isayama also released a brand-new illustration featuring Eren Yeager, Levi Ackerman, and Erwin Smith dressed in formal attire to mark the occasion.
A series of digital initiatives accompany the holiday, including a 99-hour free reading campaign for chapters 1 through 99 on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app starting September 9. Franchise voice actors Yuki Kaji (Eren), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa), and Hiro Shimono (Connie) will host a special anniversary livestream, while a newly launched global YouTube channel offers continuous anime streams, featurettes, and behind-the-scenes content. Limited-edition merchandise incorporating the new anniversary artwork has also launched via the Shonen Magazine Shop.
In addition to digital celebrations, Kodansha announced premium theatrical rereleases for the franchise’s feature films.
Attack on Titan Part 1 -Guren no Yumiya- will return to Japanese theaters in ScreenX, 4DX, and ULTRA 4DX formats starting October 23, 2026, followed by a ScreenX rerelease of Attack on Titan THE LAST ATTACK scheduled for 2027.
