MOMOKA TERASAWA AND SAYUMI SUZUSHIRO JOIN ‘CHIIKAWA’ FEATURE FILM AS HITOHAAND FUTABA

With its theatrical premiere in Japan set for July 24, 2026, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island (Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu) has officially expanded its voice cast, heightening excitement among fans of Nagano’s global pop-culture hit.

New Cast Members: Hitoha and Futaba Join the Journey

The film’s production team revealed that voice actresses Momoka Terasawa and Sayumi Suzushiro have joined the feature film as Hitoha and Futaba two gentle island residents who play a crucial role in guiding Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi when they arrive on the mysterious island for a special training retreat. The two characters are distinguished by the tiny leaves growing atop their heads.

Both actresses shared heartfelt messages about stepping into the iconic Chiikawa universe:

“I never imagined I would get to become part of the world of Chiikawa, so I’m filled with immense gratitude!” said Momoka Terasawa (voice of Hitoha). “Hitoha is an island resident who is always together with Futaba—a bit of a scaredy-cat, but full of curiosity and genuinely charming. The stage for this movie is an island, making it perfect for the season. I believe it’s a story that both children and adults can enjoy together!”

“To think I get to be involved in the world of Chiikawa… I was so happy and deeply honored that I almost cried!” expressed Sayumi Suzushiro (voice of Futaba). “During the audition process, I was moved by the powerful message embedded in this storyline. In particular, the bond between Hitoha and Futaba really struck a chord in my heart. When I found out I landed the role of Futaba, I was overjoyed and resolved to pour my whole heart into portraying those feelings.”

Adapting the Acclaimed ‘Siren Arc’ for the Big Screen

This project marks the first feature-length film adaptation for the Chiikawa franchise. The story adapts the famous “Siren Arc” originally serialized on X (formerly Twitter) in 2023, an entry celebrated by fans for contrasting Chiikawa’s cute visual aesthetic with a tense, dark-fantasy mystery involving a formidable Siren and hidden island secrets.

The feature film is animated by CygamesPictures (Granblue Fantasy: The Animation, Princess Connect! Re:Dive) under the direction of Kei Oikawa (Uma Musume: Pretty Derby). Original creator Nagano directly supervised the production and authored the screenplay to ensure a faithful cinematic translation.

Chiikawa short for Nanka Chiisakute Kawaii Yatsu (“Something Small and Cute”) has built a massive, passionate following across the Philippines. What started as viral messaging stickers and social media comic strips has expanded into a full-fledged lifestyle craze among Filipino pop culture lovers, with local fans collecting plushies, blind boxes, and apparel.

For local fans, part of the franchise’s unique appeal lies in its deceptive storytelling. While the round, adorable character designs look innocent at first glance, the narrative regularly dives into surprisingly deep, existential, and suspenseful themes. The upcoming big-screen adaptation of the “Siren Arc” represents the ultimate highlight of this signature contrast, promising anime enthusiasts a rich, emotional cinematic event.
