Building on the global success of Parasyte: The Grey, streaming giant Netflix has officially announced a new live-action drama series titled Parasyte: TAMIYA, slated to premiere worldwide in 2027.
The upcoming project returns focus to the core mythology of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s renowned manga, centering on the enigmatic parasite teacher Ryoko Tamiya.
Unpacking Parasyte’s Central Themes
Unlike its Korea-set predecessor, Parasyte: TAMIYA is an original story that explores the untold journey of Ryoko Tamiya, widely regarded as one of the manga’s most complex and compelling characters. Initially a parasite who infiltrates human society by impersonating a high school teacher, Tamiya’s encounters with protagonist Shinichi Izumi and his symbiotic partner Migi lead her to question the boundaries and possibilities of coexistence between humans and parasites.
International actress Shioli Kutsuna, known for her roles in Deadpool 2 and Sanctuary, headlines the series. Kutsuna will portray three distinct facets of the character: her original human host, her methodical parasite persona, and her internal struggle as she seeks deeper meaning in human-parasite relationships.

“The role of Ryoko Tamiya was the most challenging of my acting career,” Kutsuna shared. “For six months, I experienced emotions I’d never felt before and found myself reflecting deeply on the manga’s profound themes.”

Acclaimed director Yeon Sang-ho, creator of Train to Busan and Hellbound, serves as the planner and co-writer for the series alongside co-writer Ryu Yong-jae (Money Heist: Korea). Directorial duties are shared by Japanese directors Kensaku Kakimoto and Kazuhiro Nakagawa, with co-production helmed by Korean studio WOWPOINT and Japanese production house Episcope.
The project aims to deliver a nuanced, character-driven exploration of identity, humanity, and survival, promising a fresh perspective for both longtime fans of the original manga and newcomers to the franchise when it exclusively streams on Netflix in 2027.
