SUMIKO ARAI’S VIRAL MANGA ADAPTATION SETS WINTER 2027 DEBUT WITH NIRVANA’S “BREED” AS OPENING THEME

The official website and production committee for the upcoming television anime adaptation of Sumiko Arai’s viral yuri rock manga The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All (Kininatteru Hito ga Otoko Janakatta) have officially released its main trailer, confirming a broadcast premiere date of Friday, January 8, 2027.

Produced by studio CloverWorks (Bocchi the Rock!, SPY x FAMILY), the adaptation is directed by Masashi Ishihama (Horimiya, Persona 5: The Animation). Rino Yamasaki (Sasaki and Peeps) handles series composition, while Kanna Hirayama (Oshi no Ko) leads character design. In a major milestone for the music-driven series, the production has officially licensed Nirvana’s iconic track “Breed” as the opening theme song.

The main voice cast features Mariya Ise starring as Mitsuki Koga and Akari Kito as Aya Osawa. Supporting cast members include Kenjiro Tsuda as Joe, Tasuku Hatanaka as Megumu Narita, Fairouz Ai as Mao, Yurina Amami as Chizuru, and Maiko Nomura as Kanna.

The story centers on Aya Osawa, a stylish high schooler who frequents a local record store and falls for an enigmatic, cool employee who shares her passion for rock music. Unbeknownst to Aya, the employee is actually her quiet, unassuming desk neighbour at school, Mitsuki Koga, who wears a disguise outside of class.

Hesitant to break the illusion and shatter Aya’s feelings, Mitsuki finds herself drawn into a tangled Web of secret identities, music-driven bonding, and heartfelt high school misunderstandings.

Global anime streaming service Crunchyroll has confirmed that it will stream the series internationally. Viewers in the Philippines and across Southeast Asia will have same-day access to new episodes featuring original Japanese audio with English subtitles starting January 8, 2027, as part of the Winter 2027 seasonal slate
