ABS-CBN REPORTS LOWER REVENUES, WIDER LOSS IN FIRST HALF OF 2026

ABS-CBN Corporation remained under financial pressure in the first six months of 2026 as the media and entertainment company recorded lower consolidated revenues and a wider net loss, despite continued strength in its content production and distribution operations.

The company reported ₱6.88 billion in consolidated revenues for the first half of 2026, down about 17% from the comparable period a year earlier. Its net loss also widened to approximately ₱1.83 billion, compared with a net loss of ₱852 million in the first half of 2025.

The latest results underscore the financial challenges ABS-CBN continues to face following the transformation of its business model after the expiration of its congressional franchise in 2020.

CONTENT BUSINESS REMAINS CORE REVENUE DRIVER

ABS-CBN’s Content Production and Distribution business generated ₱5.76 billion in revenue during the first half, representing roughly 84% of the company’s consolidated revenue.

However, content revenue was also lower by about 9% year-on-year, indicating that the strength of the company’s entertainment and content operations was not enough to fully offset weakness elsewhere in the group.

The content business covers ABS-CBN’s production and distribution activities across television, film, digital platforms and international markets. The company has increasingly relied on content licensing, digital distribution, advertising, theatrical releases and other entertainment-related businesses rather than operating a traditional free-to-air television network.

The first-quarter results already showed the direction of the year’s performance. Content Production and Distribution generated ₱2.76 billion in revenue during the first quarter, down 13% from the same period in 2025, while consolidated revenue reached ₱3.33 billion.

CABLE AND BROADBAND CONTINUE TO WEIGH ON RESULTS

The company’s overall performance also continues to be affected by its cable and broadband operations.

ABS-CBN’s cable and broadband business has faced declining traditional pay-TV demand and continuing financial pressure. The company has previously identified the segment as a significant contributor to its losses, while its broader strategy has increasingly centered on content creation and distribution.

The financial strain on this part of the business is not new. In 2025, ABS-CBN’s consolidated cable TV and broadband revenues declined 39% to ₱3.27 billion, illustrating the continuing contraction of the traditional subscription-based business.

ABS-CBN’s corporate materials identify SKY Cable Corporation as its cable and broadband business, providing fiber internet and cable television services in the Philippines.

LOSSES SHOW THE CHALLENGE OF THE TRANSITION

The widening first-half loss demonstrates that ABS-CBN’s transition into a predominantly content and digital company has not yet translated into sustained group-level profitability.

The company’s financial performance is now substantially different from its pre-2020 business model, when its broadcast franchise supported a large traditional television operation and generated significant advertising revenues.

ABS-CBN has instead developed partnerships and distribution arrangements with other television networks and platforms while expanding its digital, film, international and entertainment businesses.

Its 2025 results showed that this strategy could improve the company’s underlying performance: content-production and distribution revenue increased 5% to ₱12.59 billion for the full year, although consolidated revenue declined 9% to ₱15.85 billion as cable and broadband revenue continued to fall.

FRESH CAPITAL PROVIDES ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The first-half financial results come as ABS-CBN prepares to raise ₱6 billion in new equity, providing an important potential source of capital as the company works to strengthen its financial position and continue investing in its businesses.

Three branches of the Lopez family majority—through Crème Investment Corporation, Mantes Corporation and Presta Holdings Company Inc.—have signaled a combined ₱2.2-billion investment in ABS-CBN.

Reports have also identified I&C Holdings Corp. as committing ₱3.5 billion as part of the planned ₱6-billion capital raise. The fresh capital is expected to help ABS-CBN address financial obligations and support its continuing business transformation.

The planned investment is particularly significant against the backdrop of the first-half loss because new equity can provide additional balance-sheet support without functioning as operating revenue.
