A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck waters off the southeastern coast of Tarragona, Davao Oriental, shortly after midnight on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.
The state seismology agency initially logged the event as a magnitude 5.3 tremor near Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, before updating its data.
The tectonic quake occurred at 12:34 a.m. at a shallow depth of 22 kilometers.
According to PHIVOLCS, the tremor was felt at varying intensities across neighboring areas:
- Intensity II (Slightly Felt): Mati City, Governor Generoso, Manay, San Isidro, and Tarragona in Davao Oriental
- Intensity I (Scarcely Perceptible): Davao City, and Bislig City in Surigao del Sur
While the earthquake caused noticeable shaking in several towns, state seismologists assured the public that no structural damage is anticipated. However, residents are advised to remain vigilant as minor tremors could still occur.
PHIVOLCS said no significant damage is expected from the earthquake. However, the agency warned that aftershocks may follow in the coming hours or days.
