Facing a pivotal jurisdictional ruling from the International Criminal Court (ICC), former President Rodrigo Duterte remains “unconquered,” according to his daughter, Veronica “Kitty” Duterte.
Following a visit to her father at the ICC detention facility, Kitty Duterte shared that the former leader is maintaining a defiant mindset as the Appeals Chamber prepares to decide whether the Court holds jurisdiction over the case against him.
“‘If they ask how I’m doing, tell them, invictus,’” the younger Duterte shared in an online interview, noting that the Latin term for “undefeated” best describes his current outlook.
The visit occurred just 24 hours before a scheduled decision regarding the former president’s appeal.
Duterte faces allegations of crimes against humanity stemming from the lethal “war on drugs” during his six-year administration, a campaign that resulted in thousands of deaths.
Condition in Detention
Despite the gravity of the legal proceedings, Kitty reported that her father is adjusting well to life in the facility.
She described his condition as stable and noted that he appears to be receiving proper care.
“So he was okay. He ate a fair amount today. Masaya naman ako kasi so long as he’s okay, I’m okay,” she said. “He’s in good hands.”
Faith Amid Legal Uncertainty
The Duterte family has reportedly made a conscious effort to avoid discussing the specifics of the upcoming hearings during their visits to prevent emotional strain or “disappointments.”
According to Kitty, the former president is leaning on his faith as the international court weighs its next move.
“He said, again, leave it up to God because what man proposes, God disposes,” she added.
The upcoming ruling is a landmark moment for the ICC investigation, determining whether the case will proceed or be halted based on the jurisdictional challenges raised by Duterte’s legal team.
