Acting Senate President Win Gatchalian has officially called on all lawmakers to attend a special Senate session on Wednesday, June 17, to tackle a backlog of critical bills and finalize the promotion of five military generals.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Gatchalian urged full attendance across party lines to maximize the legislative window.
“Nag-issue ako ng statement encouraging all senators, rejarding kung majority man o minority, to attend,” Gatchalian informed reporters on Tuesday.
The Senate leader emphasized that the session is a vital opportunity to pass measures that have faced legislative delays.
“Wag nating sayangin yung special session because this is the opportunity para sa atin para matapos yung mga nabinbin. That’s why importante na yung mga senators natin maka-attend,” he added.
A top priority for the day is allowing the Commission on Appointments (CA) to officially confirm the promotions of several top-ranking Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) officers.
Gatchalian warned that stalling these confirmations could disrupt the military’s leadership operations.
“Importante kasi ito, hindi sila mapo-promote at makakaapekto ito sa gagawin nila later on,” he explained.
Expressing optimism about the session’s outcome, Gatchalian noted that the Senate is actively coordinating with the leadership of the House of Representatives to ensure a productive day.
The legislative schedule is set to begin at 9:00 AM, with a temporary recess at 11:00 AM for the CA meeting. Floor proceedings will resume in the afternoon, with final adjournment projected between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
