MANILA, Philippines — Senator Loren Legarda is requesting an extension of her medical leave beyond its scheduled expiration on Friday, October 9, according to Senate President Win Gatchalian.
“Nagpapadala sila ng extension for medical leave,” Gatchalian confirmed during a television interview when asked about Legarda’s expected timeline for returning to work.
Gatchalian noted that Legarda had previously discussed her health status with him prior to taking her leave of absence.
“Sa pagkakaalam ko, nagpapatingin at nagpapahinga si Senator Loren. Sabi ko sa mga unang interview na bago siya nag-file ng medical leave, nakapag-usap kami at sabi niya meron siyang medical condition na seryoso at ito yung kanyang parte ng kanyang pagtitingin dito sa seryosong sakit niya,” he shared.
Legarda has been on leave since August 3, last appearing on the Senate floor during a plenary session on July 29.
Her spokesperson, Atty. Antonio “Tony” La Viña, previously stated that the lawmaker is in France undergoing medical care for a lung and autoimmune condition, requiring rest as stress aggravates her health.
Addressing her role in ongoing legislative duties, Gatchalian clarified that Legarda could still cast a vote in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, provided she returns and is physically present for the vote.
He reiterated that under the agreed Senate trial rules, members who fail to attend the proceedings or hear witness testimonies will not be included in the total tally of senators eligible to render a final judgment.
