A recent survey showing overwhelming public backing for the Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte proves that Filipinos are demanding transparency, according to House prosecution panel member and Batangas 2nd District Representative Gerville Luistro.
Luistro noted that the poll results reinforce the necessity of moving forward with the constitutional procedure, allowing the accusations against the Vice President to be formally litigated in the Senate.
This statement follows the House of Representatives’ decision to impeach Duterte on May 11 over various allegations, including the misappropriation of confidential funds, unexplained wealth, bribery, and alleged threats targeted at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Data from the OCTA Research “Tugon ng Masa” survey revealed that 74% of Filipinos agree that the Senate should conduct the trial, compared to 21% who object and 4% who remain unsure.
“Well, we welcome that survey, it only validates what we believe is the demand of the Filipino people now,” Luistro said during a press conference on Monday.
“At nakikita naman natin ‘yun in what is happening around na ang gusto talaga ng taumbayan ay magtuloy-tuloy itong impeachment trial,” she added. “And this is what accountability mechanism is all about.”
