Senator Robin Padilla on Tuesday denounced the “violent and aggressive” conduct of the China Coast Guard toward Filipino military personnel posted at Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
In a press statement, the actor-turned-politician expressed outrage over reports that a Philippine Navy officer was allegedly struck with a wooden club during an operation.
Padilla labeled the assault a profound insult to the nation’s armed forces and warned that it signals a dangerous escalation in the contested territorial waters.
Reflecting on the nation’s response to recurring confrontations in the area, Padilla questioned the strategy of continued forbearance, noting that the Philippines’ peaceful approach has consistently been met with intimidation.
He urged the administration to implement stronger and more resolute policies to protect frontline troops and uphold the country’s sovereign rights, stressing that formal diplomatic protests are no longer enough to curb recurring hostility.
”Hindi ako sang-ayon sa digmaan. Ngunit hindi rin ako sang-ayon na ang paghahangad natin ng kapayapaan ay abusuhin at ituring na kahinaan. Sumusobra na ang China Coast Guard,” Padilla said.
Padilla extended his support to the personnel stationed at the outpost, praising their composure and bravery despite intense provocation.
He highlighted that despite lacking weapons during the incident, the Navy personnel stood their ground and utilized available resources to defend themselves.
While reiterating his desire to avoid armed conflict, Padilla underscored that the Philippines’ dedication to peace must never be mistaken for vulnerability, maintaining that the country must stand firm whenever its service members face harm.
