President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has officially called for a special session of Congress this Wednesday, directing lawmakers to fast-track priority bills focused on social welfare, education, and healthcare amid ongoing national challenges.
Under Proclamation No. 1318, signed on Monday, the President instructed the legislature to tackle several key measures that have stalled in past deliberations. The order comes as the government manages recovery efforts following a recent earthquake in Mindanao, alongside pressing concerns over energy and public utilities.
“The challenges confronting our people demand urgent action,” Marcos stated.
The special session’s agenda features several key pieces of legislation, including the National Center for Geriatric Health Act, the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations Act, and updates to the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.
Legislators will also review the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in Private Education Act, the Last Mile and Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas Schools Act, and the Presidential Merit Scholarship Program. Additionally, an anti-political dynasty bill has been included for potential discussion.
The President emphasized that public service must remain uninterrupted, regardless of the legislative schedule.
“The needs of the Filipino people do not pause when Congress is not in session. The government must continue to respond, and the welfare of every Filipino must remain our highest priority,” he added.
Alongside legislative duties, the session will allow the Commission on Appointments to review pending nominations for crucial roles within the Cabinet, military, and foreign service.
The directive follows recent leadership friction within the Senate, which had raised concerns about the chamber’s legislative momentum.
Malacañang expressed optimism that lawmakers will set aside political disagreements to focus on strengthening social safety nets and aiding citizens affected by economic and disaster-related hardships.
