PBBM ORDERS NAVY TO BOOST CAPABILITIES AND DEFENSE TIES AMID MARITIME TENSIONS

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has instructed the Philippine Navy to upgrade its operational readiness and deepen defense ties with international allies to safeguard national interests in the West Philippine Sea and support peace throughout the Indo-Pacific.

Speaking at the Philippine Navy’s 128th anniversary celebration on Tuesday, Marcos stressed the urgency of accelerating military modernization to counter growing geopolitical challenges and fluid security dynamics.

“Strengthening the Philippine Navy’s capabilities remains essential to protecting our interests in the West Philippine Sea in light of the broader realities of our time,” the President said.

Marcos highlighted that the Indo-Pacific region has become a focal point for global trade and geopolitical affairs, making maritime defense a critical priority for the nation.

“The seas around us are arenas of competition and of conflict,” he said, noting that volatile global conditions, changing alliances, and emerging threats necessitate a more versatile maritime strategy.

To address these concerns, the President directed the Department of National Defense and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to broaden security engagements and joint initiatives with international partner countries. The directive coincides with Manila’s ongoing efforts to strengthen alliances amid unresolved territorial disputes in the West Philippine Sea.

According to Marcos, a modernized naval fleet is crucial not only for territorial defense but also for securing economic trade routes, protecting marine wealth, and fostering regional stability.

A centerpiece of the anniversary events was the formal commissioning of the BRP Rajah Lakandula, the Navy’s latest asset. Named after the historic ruler of Manila, the vessel symbolizes the country’s push toward a self-reliant defense posture.

“This vessel enhances our capacity to safeguard our resources and assert our sovereignty,” the President said.

In his address, Marcos also praised the Navy for its swift deployment after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Sarangani, pointing out that naval units in Eastern Mindanao immediately mobilized to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief.

Furthermore, the President pledged continuous government backing for naval personnel and their families through sustained funding for welfare programs, professional training, and overall mission readiness.
