MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified its security measures on physical grounds and digital networks in preparation for hosting the 49th ASEAN Summit and its associated high-level meetings this coming November.
The high-level international gathering, scheduled for November 16 to 18 in Metro Manila, is part of a broader series of regional diplomatic engagements hosted by the Philippines. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez, Jr. emphasized the necessity of maintaining stringent security protocols throughout all remaining official host activities.
“We are coordinating closely with concerned government agencies, local government units, and our security partners to ensure the safety of our delegates, guests, and the public. We will remain professional and vigilant while respecting the right to peaceful assembly,” Nartatez said.
Law enforcement officials clarified that the heightened measures are preventive strategies intended to guarantee operational readiness without inducing panic among citizens.
“Our preparations are primarily precautionary and part of our responsibility as the host country’s police force. We continue to monitor the security environment and assess any emerging threats so that we can respond promptly and appropriately. We will not allow complacency, but we also urge the public not to be alarmed,” he noted.
The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and partner law enforcement divisions have been assigned to reinforce contingency planning and operational safety surrounding major summit locations, accommodation centers, international airports, and public transport hubs.
Under the current directive, the police force will increase foot and mobile patrols while deploying specialized quick reaction units to strategic sectors.
Additionally, specialized cyber units have been ordered to actively monitor digital channels to combat misinformation, disinformation, and cyber threats targeting the event.
