PSC TO PRIORITIZE NATIONAL VOLLEYBALL PROGRAM FOR 2029 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) is shifting its primary focus toward strengthening the country’s national volleyball program ahead of hosting the 2029 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, Chairman Patrick Gregorio announced on Monday.

Gregorio’s statement comes amidst ongoing leadership and governance challenges within the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF). The federation recently faced internal friction after a majority of its executive board members withdrew support for PNVF President Tonyboy Liao, who has since publicly criticized the move.

Furthermore, the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) suspended the local body over serious governance issues and alleged violations of its Code of Ethics. The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is slated to review the federation’s status in its next general assembly.

While acknowledging the friction, Gregorio declined to comment on the specifics of the leadership row, emphasizing that the issue is already under official review.

“I don’t want to comment on that because nandoon na po ‘yan sa FIVB and assignment po ‘yan ng Philippine Olympic Committee. Basta sa amin lang po, kami sa Philippine Sports Commission, gusto lang namin na talagang ang focus is on the national team program.”

The PSC chief spoke to reporters on the sidelines of the 2026 AVC Women’s Cup at the Candon City Arena, alongside Candon Mayor Eric Singson. He reiterated that athlete development must take precedence over political disputes, especially with a major global tournament on the horizon.

“We are hosting the World Championship in 2029. Before you know it, it’s 2029. Kailangan i-focus natin ‘yung suporta natin sa development ng mga atleta.”

Gregorio stressed that the PSC’s mandate is to ensure Filipino athletes receive ample resources and training to remain competitive on the world stage by 2029. He also expressed optimism that international and regional volleyball bodies would swiftly resolve the domestic federation’s issues.

“So ako naman, naniniwala na ‘yung FIVB, together with the Asian Volleyball Confederation ay maso-solve kaagad ‘yang issue na ‘yan on the (Philippine National Volleyball Federation) sa lalong madaling panahon.”

With the FIVB and the Asian Volleyball Confederation stepped in, Gregorio remains confident that a resolution is imminent, allowing stakeholders to fully commit to long-term athletic development.
