SM SUPERMALLS EXPANDS SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY AND SMART TECH

SM Supermalls is reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability by integrating large-scale renewable energy systems and energy-saving smart technologies across its properties nationwide.

Energy efficiency is built directly into the design and daily operations of SM malls. Among the everyday features are motion-sensor escalators, which intelligently detect passenger movement. These systems operate only when shoppers approach, cutting unnecessary energy usage by up to 50 percent during low-traffic periods and 20 percent during peak hours while keeping the customer experience convenient.

Additionally, the malls utilize high-efficiency LED lighting to brighten spaces while consuming far less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs. Because LEDs produce less heat, they also lessen the cooling burden on air-conditioning systems, especially in warmer seasons.

Powering these operations is SM’s extensive solar network, recognized as the country’s largest rooftop solar panel installation among property developers. Featuring over 200,000 solar panels distributed across 75 malls, the network generates 125 MWp of renewable energy—an output equivalent to powering all households in Romblon province—thereby easing strain on the national grid.

Notable installations include the solar canopies at the SM Mall of Asia and the solar parasols at SM City Bicutan, which merge practical utility with eco-friendly design.

These eco-friendly measures form part of a broader decarbonization roadmap by parent company SM Prime Holdings, Inc., aimed at cutting carbon emissions, conserving resources, and boosting energy security.

”The energy-efficient systems we implement today are investments in a more sustainable future,” said Engr. Junias Eusebio, Vice President for Operations of SM Supermalls. “We continuously explore new ways to strengthen our energy management practices and create long-term value for the communities we serve while supporting the country’s transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon future.”
