Bacolod City has been officially selected as the site for the country’s largest Philippine Science High School (PSHS) campus, according to an announcement by Mayor Greg Gasataya.
The 10-hectare regional facility will be built in Barangay Granada, surpassing the size of the seven-hectare main campus in Quezon City.
Groundbreaking is slated for November, with school operations expected to launch in July 2027.
“The PSHS System has issued a resolution confirming Bacolod City as the site for a new PSHS campus. This will be the largest campus in the Philippines,” Gasataya said in a statement.
“This will complete our 17 campuses all over the country based on the law. This will be the biggest campus so far – bigger than our seven-hectare main campus in Quezon City – and we want to start things right,” PSHS System Executive Director Ronnalee Orteza stated.
Upon full capacity, the campus will accommodate up to 720 students, beginning with an initial intake of 120 Grade 7 students for the 2027-2028 academic year. Admitted students will benefit from comprehensive government scholarships covering free tuition, textbooks, monthly allowances, and educational support.
To prepare for the opening, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-PSHS System plans an information campaign across the Negros Island Region to encourage eligible Grade 6 students to take the PSHS National Competitive Examination on January 30, 2027.
This development fulfills the mandate of Republic Act 12310, or the Expanded Philippine Science High School System Act passed last October, which mandates at least two PSHS campuses per administrative region to broaden access to STEM education nationwide.
The system currently runs 16 campuses, including three in the Visayas located in Iloilo City, Argao (Cebu), and Palo (Leyte).
