The New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship in over half a century on Saturday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
Star guard Jalen Brunson spearheaded the historic victory, exploding for a game-high 45 points to seal the series and secure New York’s first Larry O’Brien Trophy since 1973. Following his spectacular performance throughout the series, Brunson was officially named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The road to victory required a gritty comeback for New York. San Antonio controlled the tempo for the majority of the evening, building multiple double-digit leads.
However, the resilient Knicks systematically chipped away at the deficit, capturing their very first lead of the game with only 3:40 remaining in the fourth quarter before holding off a late Spurs rally.
With the victory, the Knicks wrapped up the best-of-seven series 4-1, concluding a dominant postseason run in which they suffered only three losses.
The historic moment was met with loud cheers from a large contingent of traveling New York fans who filled the arena to witness the end of a 53-year championship drought.
