Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala extended her dominant run on Saturday, August 1 (Philippine time), outlasting former world No. 3 Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the Mubadala DC Open in Washington, D.C.
The victory puts Eala just two wins shy of capturing her maiden WTA 500 trophy. Throughout the one-hour and 34-minute quarterfinal clash, the young star displayed exceptional poise, breaking the top-tier Ukrainian’s serve six times.
This result marks Eala’s sixth win against a Top 10 opponent this season and her second straight victory over Svitolina, following a similar straight-sets performance at the Berlin Open quarterfinals in June.
After trading serve breaks through the opening five games, Eala held serve in the sixth to build a 4-2 advantage. Dictating the pace from the baseline, she comfortably clinched the opening set.
Svitolina attempted a comeback in the second set, holding early leads of 2-1 and 3-2. However, Eala stayed patient, regaining momentum before securing the decisive break in the 10th game to wrap up the match.
The win sets up a marquee semifinal showdown against four-time Grand Slam winner and third seed Naomi Osaka, who battled back to defeat Elisabetta Cocciaretto 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Looking ahead to the semifinal clash, Eala shared her admiration for her upcoming opponent during her post-match interview:
“She is of course an accomplished player and I think she’s made waves on and off the court for so many reasons and there’s so much respect for that. I’m really excited.”
“I haven’t had that much time to think about it but of course, I’m going to think about it,” she added.
Eala now turns her focus toward Osaka as she aims to secure her first-ever spot in a WTA 500 final.
