FAITH AND SECOND CHANCES: WHY TV5’S ‘MY BESPREN EMMAN’ IS A MUST-WATCH FOR FILIPINO FAMILIES

In a television landscape saturated with intense revenges, high-stakes betrayals, and complex thrillers, TV5 has introduced a refreshing detour that centers entirely on faith, second chances, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.

My Bespren Emman, which premiered on April 27, 2026, as part of the network’s TodoMax Primetime Singko lineup, offers a heartfelt and deeply introspective story that mirrors the real-life struggles, hopes, and spiritual journeys of everyday Filipinos.

Co-directed by Derick Cabrido and Jerome Pobocan, and written by Enrico Santos, the series follows the intertwined lives of Mateo (JM de Guzman), a man with a haunted past as an ex-convict, and Ruth (Shaina Magdayao), a resilient woman raised in an orphanage after being born inside prison walls. As they navigate the immense challenges of rebuilding their lives and raising their daughter Miriam (Ryrie Sophia)—a child with a disability—Mateo makes a desperate, dangerous choice that leads him to a life-altering incident.

It is within this darkness that he encounters a mysterious, guiding figure named Emman, who sets him on a profound spiritual journey of healing and redemption.

The pilot episode stunned audiences by revealing that OPM legend Ely Buendia plays the enigmatic titular character, Emman, who first appears as an ordinary taho vendor offering timely wisdom to a conflicted Mateo.

For director Derick Cabrido, the core of the show responds directly to a collective societal need for renewal.

“I was attracted to direct this because I realized that all of us now want and believe in second chances. All of us dream of another opportunity to better our lives. On a national, domestic and personal level, it has truly been a bumpy and chaotic ride for all of us. And yet, we persevere and live.”

What makes My Bespren Emman exceptionally compelling is how the narrative mirrors the real-life vulnerabilities of its cast. Lead actor JM de Guzman openly shared during the show’s press conference that the project arrived at a crucial moment in his own life, directly aiding his personal healing process.

“Bago pa lang mag-start ang show, to be honest, I’m battling spiritual warfare. I lost my connection with God. I lost my relationship with God. This show helped me reconnect with him.”

Beyond its star-studded ensemble—which includes stellar performances from Sid Lucero, Ai-Ai delas Alas, and Mitch Valdez—the production values shine through its authenticity.

Young actress Ryrie Sophia underwent intensive acting workshops and learned legitimate sign language to respectfully and accurately portray a person with a disability (PWD).

Ultimately, My Bespren Emman succeeds because it avoids being overly preachy. Instead, it presents beautifully flawed, deeply relatable characters who show that no matter how far one has strayed or how heavy life’s burdens become, hope and goodness remain within reach. It is a timely, comforting reminder for Filipino households that they are never truly alone in their battles.
