FIFA CONFIRMS IRAN’S PARTICIPATION IN 2026 WORLD CUP

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dismissing speculation that escalating geopolitical tensions could affect the nation’s qualification or participation.

Speaking to CNBC, Infantino stressed that sporting merit and the rights of qualified teams take precedence over political developments. The tournament is scheduled to begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Commitment to Football Over Politics
Despite ongoing regional tensions involving the United States and Israel since February 28, Infantino reiterated that FIFA maintains a neutral stance and aims to keep football separate from political conflict.

“If there’s nobody else that believes in building bridges and keeping them intact and together, we are doing the job,” Infantino said.

He emphasized that Iran’s participation is secured based on qualification and the expectations of its players and supporters.

“Iran is coming for sure. We hope that by then the situation will be a peaceful situation, that would definitely help. Iran has to come, they represent their people, they have qualified, the players want to play. Sports should be outside of politics.”

Tournament Logistics and Security
Iran is expected to play matches in the United States as part of the expanded tournament format, raising logistical and security considerations involving travel arrangements, visa processing, and diplomatic coordination.

The 2026 World Cup, officially known as the FIFA World Cup 2026, will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marking the first time the tournament will be jointly staged by three countries.

FIFA’s statement signals that the established tournament structure and fixtures will proceed as planned, with hosting responsibilities and security arrangements to be managed by the North American organizers.
