SEREMBAN, Malaysia — The Gilas Pilipinas Girls staged a impressive second-half turnaround to upset New Zealand, 69-64, claiming their first win in FIBA Women’s U18 Asia Cup Division A at the Karisma Arena on Tuesday, October 6.
Trailing 30-39 at the main break, the Filipinas orchestrated a dominant third-quarter comeback. Launching an unanswered 11-point run to start the period, the Nationals outscored the New Zealanders 20-4 to seize a 50-43 advantage entering the final frame.
Although Gilas pushed the lead to nine points in the fourth quarter, New Zealand trimmed the deficit to a single point, 64-65, before the Philippines slammed the door shut.
Zaydhen Rosano powered the victory with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds, sinking two critical free throws with 24 seconds left to secure the three-point cushion and lock up the win.
Rianne Perez provided key support with 13 points, while Tiffany Reyes and Grace Curley scored nine points each. Ruiza Olmos added eight points to round out the scoring attack.
Keija Maringaorangi spearheaded New Zealand’s effort with 17 points, accompanied by Madelin Eliadis who added 14.
With the historic win, Gilas secured third place in Group A and clinched a spot in the knockout round. They advance to face the second seed from Group B in the qualification match for a semifinal spot. Group B’s top seeding will be decided by an upcoming match between undefeated powerhouses China and Japan.
