In a defiant address broadcast on state television this Thursday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei proclaimed that the United States has suffered a “disgraceful defeat” in the Middle East.
The statement comes as a direct challenge to U.S. President Donald Trump’s warnings regarding a prolonged naval blockade intended to cripple the Iranian economy.
Khamenei, who ascended to leadership last month following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, asserted that the regional balance of power has shifted decisively toward Tehran despite significant military pressure from Washington.
”Today, two months after the largest military deployment and aggression by the world’s bullies in the region, and the United States’ disgraceful defeat in its plans, a new chapter is unfolding for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” he stated.
The Supreme Leader further suggested that foreign intervention in the region is nearing its end, issuing a grim warning to outside forces.
”Foreign powers have no place there except at the bottom of its waters,” he added.
Strategic Stalemate in the Strait
The conflict, which ignited in late February, has reached a tense maritime standoff. While the United States initiated a naval blockade of Iranian ports two weeks ago, Iran continues to hold significant leverage over the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping corridor.
In response, the U.S. State Department confirmed efforts to organize an international coalition of commercial shipping groups and allied nations. The goal is to secure safe passage through the Strait while maintaining strict enforcement of restrictions on Iranian-linked vessels.
Trump Pressures NATO Allies
As tensions escalate, President Trump has expanded his criticism of NATO partners, accusing them of providing insufficient support for U.S.-Israeli operations.
Trump has threatened to withdraw American troops not only from Germany but also from Italy and Spain, signaling a potential shift in long-standing European security arrangements.
Questions remain regarding Khamenei’s physical condition and whereabouts; he has yet to make a public appearance since reportedly being wounded in the initial strikes that killed his predecessor.
