United Nations member states met at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday to deliberate on the permanent removal of International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan.
The 56-year-old British lawyer has faced accusations of sexual misconduct involving a female staff member, as detailed in reports by The Associated Press. Khan has repeatedly denied all allegations of wrongdoing.
The two-year-old controversy comes as the tribunal faces escalating global scrutiny, including a recent U.S. initiative to dismantle the 24-year-old institution.
Khan was officially relieved of his duties in June after an investigation by the ICC oversight body’s executive committee found he had committed a “serious breach of duty and serious misconduct” by entering into a “sexual relationship … (that) escalated over time”
and subsequently attempting to stop the employee from pursuing her complaint, according to documents reviewed by The Associated Press.
Khan continues to reject the oversight body’s findings and disputes their conclusions.
