Legendary culinary manga Oishinbo is officially making its return to television with a brand-new anime project titled Shin Oishinbo (New Oishinbo), as announced during a stage event at the ABEMA Anime Festival 2026.
The official reveal took place during Shin-Ei Animation’s 50th-anniversary special stage, accompanied by a teaser trailer and promotional visual declaring: “The origin and the peak — the ultimate food anime is revived here!”
Shin-Ei Animation the studio behind iconic franchises such as Doraemon, Crayon Shin-chan, and the original 1988 Oishinbo anime adaptation will lead production on the revival. Specific details regarding the director, main voice cast, broadcast network, and official premiere date are scheduled to be revealed in upcoming updates.
Written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, Oishinbo began serialization in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits magazine in 1983. With 111 published volumes and over 135 million copies sold globally, it stands as one of the best-selling manga series in history, having remained on indefinite hiatus since 2014.
The narrative centers on Shiro Yamaoka, a talented yet unmotivated journalist at Tozai News, and his colleague Yuko Kurita as they work to curate the “Ultimate Menu” for the newspaper’s centennial celebration. Their culinary journey places them in direct rivalry with Shiro’s estranged father, Yuzan Kaibara, a renowned gourmet who oversees the competing “Supreme Menu” for a rival publication.
Shin-Ei Animation previously produced the original 136-episode television anime series between 1988 and 1992, alongside multiple television specials and live-action adaptations. Shin Oishinbo marks the franchise’s return to animated television for the first time in over three decades, promising a fresh installment in the classic culinary showdown saga.
