The anime and voice acting industry is mourning the loss of veteran Japanese voice actress Wakana Yamazaki, best known as the voice behind Ran Mouri in the long running anime franchise Detective Conan. She was 61 years old.
Her agency, Aoni Production, confirmed that Yamazaki passed away on April 18, 2026 after undergoing medical treatment for an undisclosed illness. The announcement was made public on May 15, with the agency stating that funeral services were held privately at the request of her family.
Yamazaki had previously announced a temporary hiatus from voice acting activities earlier this year due to health concerns, with fellow voice actress Akemi Okamura stepping in as the temporary replacement for Ran Mouri in Detective Conan broadcasts.
The news sent shockwaves throughout the anime community worldwide, particularly among longtime Detective Conan fans who grew up hearing Yamazaki portray Ran for nearly three decades.
Voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi, known as the voice of Shinichi Kudo in Detective Conan, shared an emotional statement following the announcement:
“When I heard the news of her passing,
the only words that came out were, ‘This can’t be true… right?’
It felt like a hollow space suddenly opened inside me, and all I could hear was the sound of my own heartbeat echoing in my head.
The news of Wakana-chan’s passing is just too shocking…
I still can’t organize my thoughts or my feelings at all, but for now, I believe that giving my absolute best in this performance is the tribute I can offer, so I will do my best.”
Meanwhile, Naoko Matsui, the voice of Sonoko Suzuki, also paid tribute to her longtime colleague and friend:
“Ran… I’ll always be your friend for life.”
“Everyone, it’s okay. Take a deep breath.
Ran and Sonoko have always been — and will always be — best friends ☺️☺️
And of course, that will never change.
Thank you, Wakana-chan.”
Born on March 21, 1965 in Yokohama, Japan, Yamazaki built a celebrated career spanning more than three decades in anime, video games, and tokusatsu productions. While she became globally recognized for voicing Ran Mouri in Detective Conan since 1996, her résumé extended far beyond the beloved detective series.
Among her notable anime and gaming roles were Meiko Akizuki in Marmalade Boy, Arukenimon in Digimon Adventure 02, Ayane in the Dead or Alive franchise, Nene and Okuni in Samurai Warriors, and Ikuko Tsukino in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie. She also temporarily voiced Nami in One Piece during Akemi Okamura’s maternity leave.
Outside anime, Yamazaki also appeared in tokusatsu productions including B-Fighter Kabuto and Ultraman Dyna.
Tributes from fans, fellow voice actors, gaming communities, and anime productions quickly flooded social media following the announcement, with many describing her voice as an unforgettable part of their childhood.
Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama also released a heartfelt tribute, expressing sadness that he would “never again hear that gentle, comforting voice.”
Wakana Yamazaki leaves behind a legacy that helped define multiple generations of anime fans around the world, with her performances continuing to resonate across anime, gaming, and Japanese pop culture.
