JAPANESE TOKUSATSU LEGEND KENJI OHBA, STAR OF “SPACE SHERIFF GAVAN,” DIES AT 71

Kenji Ohba, the legendary Japanese actor and stunt performer best known for his iconic role as Retsu Ichijouji in Space Sheriff Gavan, has passed away at the age of 71.

According to reports from his agency and Japanese media outlets, Ohba died on May 6, 2026, following a long illness. His passing was officially announced on May 7 by Japan Action Enterprise, the agency closely associated with many of Japan’s most celebrated tokusatsu actors and stunt performers.

A Pillar of Tokusatsu History

Born Kenji Takahashi on February 5, 1955, in Ehime Prefecture, Ohba rose from suit actor and stuntman to become one of the defining figures of Japanese tokusatsu entertainment during the 1970s and 1980s.

He became widely admired for his physically demanding performances and charismatic portrayals of heroic characters in productions by Toei Company.

Ohba’s career reached new heights through his starring role in Space Sheriff Gavan from 1982 to 1983, a performance that launched the Metal Hero Series and cemented his status as one of tokusatsu’s most beloved heroes.

He also portrayed several iconic characters throughout his career, including:

• Battle Kenya / Shiro Akebono in Battle Fever J
