NICOTINE TREND DEFINES SUMMER 2026 LATE-NIGHT ANIME

The Summer 2026 anime season is set to take an unexpected turn, as two standout series bring the culture of nicotine and smoking areas to the forefront of late-night television. Departing from the usual isekai adventures and shonen action, this July’s lineup is defined by the atmospheric, cigarette-infused narratives of Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You and Chainsmoker Cat.

A Cozy, Mature Romance: Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You

Adapted by Asahi Production from Jinushi’s award-winning manga, this highly anticipated slice-of-life drama focuses on an adult connection forged in the quiet moments of cigarette breaks. The story follows Sasaki, an overworked 45-year-old salaryman, whose only daily respite is a brief encounter with Yamada, a cheerful cashier. When he misses her, a chance meeting with “Tayama” Yamada’s off-duty persona transforms his nightly routine.

Under the direction of Tadato Suzuki and Aoi Mori, the series delves into themes of corporate burnout and the comfort of genuine conversation, all against the backdrop of late-night smoking areas. The series is scheduled to premiere on TBS on July 9, 2026. Crunchyroll has confirmed it will offer an advance preview of the first six episodes, which will be split into twelve 10-minute minisodes.

Edgy, Absurdist Comedy: Chainsmoker Cat (Yani Neko)

Taking a far more chaotic approach to the theme is Chainsmoker Cat, a television adaptation of the viral manga by NyanNyanFactory. Produced by Bibury Animation Studios and helmed by director Taku Kimura, the series centers on Yaniko, a catgirl hopelessly addicted to smoking. Her misadventures with fellow catgirls and a long-suffering landlord blend slapstick humor with a degenerate slice-of-life edge, all reinforced by an ironic score from rock legend Keiichi Suzuki.

Chainsmoker Cat debuts on Tokyo MX and affiliates on July 3, 2026. The soundtrack leans heavily into the show’s smoky aesthetic, featuring the opening theme “Nanmonee” by Wasureranneyo and the ending theme “Kemuri to Blue” by Necry Talkie.

Where to Watch

Both series have secured official international distribution to reach a wide audience. Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You will be available for streaming on both Crunchyroll and Netflix. Meanwhile, Chainsmoker Cat has been licensed by Medialink for regional viewers in Asia. Filipino and global fans alike can expect an atmospheric, unconventional anime summer one that promises to be a unique departure from the standard seasonal fare.
