The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and Cignal TV have officially reaffirmed their long-standing alliance, signing a new agreement on May 12 to maintain Cignal as the federation’s official marketing and media arm.
The signing ceremony was spearheaded by SBP President and MediaQuest Holdings Inc. President Victorico “Ricky” Vargas, alongside MediaQuest Holdings Chief Finance Officer Christopher Lizo.
This renewal ensures that Cignal TV will continue to lead the commercial and broadcasting efforts for the country’s national basketball programs, including Gilas Pilipinas.
A Legacy of Collaboration
The partnership between the SBP and Cignal TV is rooted in a shared mission to elevate Philippine basketball on the global stage.
As the media arm of the PLDT Group, Cignal has been instrumental in providing comprehensive coverage of international tournaments, grassroots initiatives, and the journey of the national team.
- Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP): Formed in 2007 to replace the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP), the SBP is the national sport association for basketball in the Philippines. Under the leadership of Chairman Emeritus Manuel V. Pangilinan and current President Ricky Vargas, the federation has successfully overseen the Philippines’ return to FIBA prominence, including the historic hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
- Cignal TV: Launched in 2009, Cignal is the country’s premier Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite provider. Through its dedicated sports channels like One Sports and PBA Rush, it has become the primary destination for Filipino basketball fans, offering high-definition broadcasts of local and international games.
Strengthening the National Game
Under the extended agreement, Cignal TV will continue to manage the marketing assets of the SBP, bridging the gap between corporate partners and the national team.
This synergy has previously resulted in massive fan engagement and record-breaking viewership during Gilas Pilipinas campaigns.
“The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas was formed… as a strong symbol of commitment to bring Philippine Basketball to a higher path, illuminated by the eternal principle of unity and focused on grassroots development and international excellence.”
With this renewed contract, both organizations aim to further professionalize the sport’s administration and expand the reach of the SBP’s programs to every corner of the archipelago.
